I had a conversation with my mentor this morning that brought me back to the beginning.
I was one of his first 20 clients. Different market. Smaller town. Different challenges than what he was used to. And he told me something I didn’t expect, he was nervous on our first call.
He didn’t know how he could help me.
Think about that.
Now fast forward years later… growth, progress, results, lessons learned. What once felt uncertain became something we both grew into.
And it hit me. That feeling hasn’t gone away.
I Felt It Again Recently
Stepping into my new role as a full-time fire captain, I felt it all over again.
That same nervous energy.
New responsibilities. New expectations. New situations where I don’t have all the answers yet.
And for a moment, that voice creeps in:
“Am I ready for this?”
But here’s what I’ve learned and what I keep coming back to:
👉 That feeling isn’t a warning sign.
👉 It’s a signal.
A signal that you’re stepping into something that matters.
A signal that you’re growing.
Because the truth is, the nervousness fades—but only after you walk through it.
The Lesson That Stuck With Me
I remember reading about Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx.
Growing up, her dad would ask her and her brother one question every day:
“What did you fail at today?”
If they didn’t have an answer, he’d be disappointed.
Think about how different that is.
Instead of avoiding failure… they were expected to pursue it.
Instead of fearing mistakes… they were trained to look for the lesson.
That mindset changes everything.
Because when you stop trying to avoid failure, you start moving forward faster.
This Is Exactly What We See Every Day at CrossFit Viroqua
People walk through our doors nervous all the time.
- “I’m out of shape.”
- “I don’t know what I’m doing.”
- “Everyone else is going to be ahead of me.”
- “What if I fail?”
And I get it.
Because I’ve felt it—in business, in the fire department, in life.
But here’s the truth most people don’t realize until they experience it:
No one walks in confident.
Confidence is built after you show up.
Not before.
What Happens When You Lean Into It
When you walk through those doors despite the nerves…
- You realize you’re not alone
- You realize everything is scalable
- You realize no one is judging you
- You realize you’re capable of more than you thought
And slowly…
That nervous feeling turns into something else.
Pride.
Momentum.
Belief.
The Real Risk Isn’t Failure
The real risk is waiting until you feel “ready.”
Because that moment rarely comes.
If I would’ve waited until I felt fully ready to grow my business…
If I would’ve waited until I felt completely confident stepping into a leadership role…
I’d still be standing still.
So If You’re Feeling Nervous…
Good.
That’s exactly where you’re supposed to be.
It means you care.
It means you’re about to grow.
It means you’re stepping into something new.
Now the question is:
Are you going to listen to that feeling… or lean into it?

Final Thought
