What My Daughter Is Teaching Me About Health, Fitness, and Real Progress
Over the last several months, my wife and I have had a front-row seat to something incredible.
Watching our daughter learning how to walk.
If you’ve ever watched a baby learn this skill, you know it’s messy. Wobbly. Uncertain. Full of starts and stops. She’ll pull herself up, take a step or two, lose her balance, fall… and then do something remarkable.
She smiles.
She crawls back to the couch.
And she tries again.
No self-judgment.
No quitting.
She isn’t thinking, “I should already be good at this.”
She isn’t comparing herself to other babies.
She isn’t trying to run before she can stand.
She doesn't know it yet, but she’s simply focused on progress, one small attempt at a time.
And honestly? Watching her has reassured me that we are doing things correct at CrossFit Viroqua, about success in health, fitness, and wellness.
The Lie We’ve Been Sold About “Getting Fit”
Somewhere along the way, adults were taught a very different lesson.
That success should be fast.
That results should be dramatic.
That if it’s not hard right now, it’s not working.
So when someone decides to “get healthy,” they often try to change everything at once:
- New workouts
- New diet
- New schedule
- New identity
And when something doesn’t go perfectly?
They assume they are the problem.
They quit.
But babies don’t do that.
They don’t stop trying to walk because they fell yesterday.
They don’t decide it’s “not for them.”
They don’t wait for Monday.
They simply keep showing up and doing what they’re capable of today.
That’s real success.
How Real Progress Actually Happens
Here’s what learning to walk actually looks like:
- Support first – Holding onto furniture
- Slow movement – One step at a time
- Lots of repetition – Same movement, over and over
- Small setbacks – Falls are part of the process
- Gradual independence – Strength, balance, confidence grow
That’s not just how humans learn to walk.
That’s how humans learn anything.
Including how to move well.
How to get stronger.
How to take care of their health long-term.
This Is Exactly How We Coach at CrossFit Viroqua
When someone walks into CrossFit Viroqua for the first time, they’re not expected to know anything.
We don’t throw them into the deep end.
We don’t test their toughness.
We don’t rush the process.
We start exactly where they are.
Just like a baby learning to walk, we begin with support and fundamentals.
- We teach movements with a PVC pipe, not a barbell
- We slow everything down to focus on good positions and control
- We build confidence before intensity
- We prioritize safety and understanding over speed
No ego.
No pressure.
No comparison.
And over time, something powerful happens.
That PVC pipe becomes a light barbell.
That light barbell becomes real strength.
Those simple movements turn into higher-level skills.
And that uncertainty turns into confidence.
Not overnight.
Not all at once.
But steadily.
Why This Approach Actually Works
Most people don’t fail at fitness because they’re lazy.
They fail because they try to run before they can walk.
They skip the fundamentals.
They rush the process.
They expect perfection instead of progress.
But sustainable health, the kind that lasts for decades is built the same way a child learns to walk:
- Patiently
- Consistently
- With support
- One step at a time
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life to succeed.
You just need to take the next small step.
Then the next one.
Then another.
Redefining Success
Success in health and fitness isn’t:
- Six-week transformations
- All-or-nothing mindsets
- Crushing yourself every workout
Real success looks like:
- Moving a little better this month than last
- Feeling more confident in your body
- Building habits you don’t have to “start over” from
- Showing up even when progress feels slow
Just like my daughter learning to walk, the goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is forward motion.
If You’re Ready to Take Your First Step
If you’ve been thinking about starting…
If you’ve tried before and felt overwhelmed…
If you’re worried you’re “too far behind”…
You’re not.
You don’t need to do everything.
You don’t need to be ready.
You just need to start where you are and we’ll walk with you from there.
At CrossFit Viroqua, that’s exactly what we do.
One step at a time.
